Torbay is the administrative name given to the three towns that hug the coast of Tor Bay in South Devon. Marketed as the English Riviera, Torquay, Paignton and Brixham form the seventh largest conurbation in the South West Region with a population of 123,000.
The Torbay parliamentary constituency's new boundary contains 11 of the 15 wards that make up the Torbay UA. These are the 7 wards of Torquay and 4 of the six wards that contain parts of Paignton.
The area has long been recognised as the UK's number one staying resort with over 9 million bed nights and 1.4 million visitors a year. It is less well known that 75 percent of all North American internet traffic is carried on equipment made in Paignton, and that the local economy is rapidly moving away from its dependence on tourism to a centre of excellence for new technology manufacturing.
Sadly, from its peak in 2001 over 5000 jobs have been lost in the opto electrical industry in Torbay.
According to the University of Plymouth, recent redundancies have lost the local economy £75M. this compares with the £60M estimated cost of Foot and Mouth across the whole of Devon.
Torbay has a magnificent environment and a skilled and able workforce. A warm welcome awaits the inward investor.
